Reducing Big Truck related fatalities:


1) DECREASE HOURS WORKED by DRIVERS 50%.


2) INCREASE DRIVER PAY 50%.


3) PAY DRIVERS FOR ALL HOURS WORKED and/or "detained".


4) RESPECT CIRCADIAN RHYTHM of DRIVERS.


Since SELECTIVE DEREGULATION in the 80s, Driver Pay has decreased 50%.

To make ends meet, Drivers must now work twice as many hours to make the same pay. Since EVERYTHING ELSE costs more because the COST OF EVERYTHING ELSE went up, except driver pay, this leaves Drivers in a very nasty place.


This "nasty place" explains the alleged "DRIVER SHORTAGE", which is actually a product of LOW PAY, TOO MANY HOURS WORKED, TOO MANY HOURS WASTED & UNPAID, TOTAL LACK OF RESPECT FOR A DRIVER'S CIRCADIAN RHYTHM, and a general LACK OF RESPECT for DRIVERS


Add to this an onslaught of HEAVY FINES to "crack down" on "illegalities", which are almost exclusively directed at ONLY DRIVERS,  whereas they are most often caused by  SHIPPER, RECEIVER and/or LOAD BROKER COERCION. But the latter are untouchable, and get away scot free, until a truck is in an accident. Then the above get sued.


Curiously, whenever a truck is involved in an accident virtually EVERY TRUCKING ACCIDENT ATTORNEY knows there was more often than not fault (COERCION) by the Load Broker, Shipper and/or Receiver. They sue these parties because PROSECUTION ATTORNEYS know the nefarious role of LOAD BROKERS, SHIPPERS & RECEIVERS  on  HIGHWAY SAFETY. But somehow the DOT is oblivious to this well know fact by EVERYONE, except the DOT.


The problem(s) all began with:
SELECTIVE DEREGULATION !

OVERREGULATION OF DRIVERS, FREE-FOR-ALL & TOTAL IMPUNITY for Shippers, Receivers and Load Brokers.


The fact that this alleged "driver shortage" has been going on for some 30 years now, with no solution on the horizon, demonstrates this must not be a very big problem. Not yet anyway. Freight is still moving.


Instead of addressing the REAL ISSUES, we now have a RACE TO THE BOTTOM. Less and less qualified drivers are being recruited and let loose on the public. This will certainly result in even more accidents.


Since the ELD MANDATE was implemented, FATALITIES ARE UP! ELDs are causing accidents, increasing injuries and killing people!!!


ELDs have had the exact opposite effect of what they were purported to do!


ELDs do not attack the root cause of the problem.


The root cause of the problem is that whereas EVERYONE ELSE in society is fighting for a 35 hour work week, (or already have this), Drivers are obliged to "LEGALLY" work 70 hours. But this is not the worst of it.


70 HOUR WORK WEEKS ARE JUST THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG!


Most drivers are obliged to work or wait (UNPAID) another 20, 30, 40 or even 70 hours per week for FREE. Most drivers actually work 100 to 140 hours per week, but are only paid for 70 hours, or much less.


And herein lies the "driver shortage". There is a growing "shortage" of drivers willing to work 100 to 140 hours per week, but only getting paid for 70 hours, or much less. This when the rest of the world is fighting for a 35 hour work week!




 Far more useful and effective for SAVING LIVES & SAVING THE PLANET would be MANDATORY electrical plug-in SHORE POWER for all commercial vehicles with a sleeper. Reduce idling, noise, pollution, wasted fuel, engine wear... by mandating Truck Stops, Rest Areas and Truck Manufacturers to include & provide MANDATORY electric plug-in Heating & Cooling SHORE POWER, just like aircraft, yachts and RVs have had for DECADES! This would help ensure restful & adequate sleep to prevent "fatigued driving" and accidents:  SAVING LIVES and the planet from extinction due to needless POLLUTION!

It is pretty accurate... except he forgot to mention how the way the industry is presently run TOTALLY DESTROYS THE HEALTH OF MANY TRUCKERS.  When Truckers are Burned Out or no longer capable of working due to abuse & injuries, "working conditions" that would be CRIMINAL in any other industry, they are dumped into Social Security/Medicare for the Government and TAX PAYERS to  subsidize.

Dan Rather Report on Trucking. Deals with the challenges of Owner Operators. If Load Brokers sell loads for less than it costs to operate a truck SAFELY, (not even enough to pay fuel, tires, brakes, maintenance...), is this a SUSTAINABLE MODEL? Does this promote HIGHWAY SAFETY? This is a DANGEROUS  RACE TO THE BOTTOM!


The above leads to accidents when Owner Operators are not even paid enough to pay for costs of fuel & maintenance! This is the result of SELECTIVE DEREGULATION.
